Our History
Malvern Prep is the direct continuation of the academy program founded in 1842 by the Augustinians as the “preparatory” school for what is now Villanova University.  The Augustinian community purchased the farm called Belle-Aire in January 1842, to establish a college and monastery under the patronage of St. Thomas of Villanova.  During the next year, Rev. John O’Dwyer, the first president, worked tirelessly to get the school up and running, and traveled to Europe in search of qualified faculty.  The first Mass was celebrated on St. Augustine’s Day, August 28, 1843, and the seven students that year were all under the age of 16.  The original academy building, built in 1848, is now called Alumni Hall, and stands just behind the Chapel at Villanova.

The Inauguration of the Second President of Malvern Prep
On November 6, 2006, at a special ceremony on campus, Malvern Preparatory School formally inaugurated James H. Stewart as president and installed the Rev. James. R. Flynn, O.S.A. as head of school.

The inauguration was a significant event in the history of the school. Malvern Prep has had only one other president in its history, the late Rev. David J. Duffy, O.S.A. ’48. The inauguration represents a link between Stewart and Duffy, who worked side-by-side for many years and, most of all, the inauguration provided an opportunity for the Malvern community to come together to celebrate its great tradition and plans for the future.

During the spring of 2008, Malvern Prep successfully completed the $14.3 million Create + Strengthen + Embrace – The Vision for Malvern Campaign, which resulted in the growth of our endowment, the construction of the Strength and Conditioning Center, the installation of air conditioning in Carney Hall and, of course, the construction of the magnificent Rev. David J. Duffy, O.S.A. Arts Center. IMG_DuffyVideo.jpg

On March 1, 2008, Malvern held a Campaign Benefactor Celebration which included the dedication and blessing of the Duffy Center. During this event, Malvern celebrated the vision for Malvern Prep that Fr. Duffy had embraced.

The school has developed a special video offering tribute to Fr. Duffy. This video chronicles his life and explores the many ways that Fr. Duffy touched those around him.
