Introducing My Backpack, Malvern's New Grade and Homework Program
Point Person: Mike Hickey, Director of Academic Affairs - 484-595-1161
My Backpack is Malvern's new web-based Student Community, which provides a complete view of schedules, attendance, grades and comment information. Your family will now have the ability to review your son's assignments and, through the Daily Grade Book for Malvern's faculty, view the assignment grades and comments entered by each teacher. You will have the ability to access:

  • Address information
  • Schedule of enrolled classes
  • Homework assignments
  • Daily assignment grades
  • Grades and comments received up to the last marking period including GPA's
  • Discipline history
  • Current year attendance
  • Online inquiries and applications
  • Current Report Card
  • Student Directory

In addition, as parents you will have the capability to update your contact information. This data can then be reviewed and modified by the School. You can also search for other students and parents using the web-based student/parent directory. This searchable screen allows you to narrow your selection by name, zip code, grade and even homeroom teacher.

To access My Backpack go to https://backpack.malvernprep.org/SeniorApps/registration/loginCenter.faces. You may also access it through Malvern’s webpage by following the "Parents and Students" link. Login is necessary. My Backpack login accounts were distributed on September 12.

*Please note that your unique Malvern Prep website login and My Backpack login are different. The Malvern Prep website login will not gain you access to My Backpack. Please contact Mr. Hickey with questions concerning your My Backpack login.

Opportunity to Host an International Student
Point Person: Lida Rosle, Counselor and Language Teacher – 484-595-1135
Malvern Prep is in the process of organizing a cultural exchange with two Augustinian schools abroad, one in Panama and one in Spain. The School is looking for approximately 8-10 host families who are interested in hosting an international student for one to two months between January and March 2009. These students are proficient in English, so you don’t need to be fluent in Spanish! We are primarily looking for sophomore and junior parents but would welcome senior parents as well. This program will be the beginning of a mutual exchange between our schools offering opportunities for Malvern students to attend the other schools at a later date. If interested, please contact Lida Rosle at arosle@malvernprep.org or call 484-595-1135 for additional information.

Malvern Theatre Society Update
All the “folks” from Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire, are working very hard to get all the basic blocking (stage movement) down. This week, for the first time, the actors had to put their scripts down to look into the eyes of those to whom they are speaking. The Stage Crews are just as busy, making a “sparse” set look filled enough with all the right stuff. Student and staff energy is high as we prepare for this fall’s production of Our Town. Please highlight November 7, 8, 14, and 15 for the 8:00 p.m. Our Town productions at the Duffy Center each evening. Stay tuned to the Malvern Weekly for an announcement about ticket sales. If your Malvern office or area business is interested in placing an ad in the program, please contact Kate Plows at kplows@malvernprep.org.

Empty Bowls Update
Point Person: Kate Plows, Ceramics Teacher - 484-595-5203
MW100608_EmptyBowls.jpgMalvern students, faculty, and staff have been working hard on the creation of 400 ceramic bowls for the Empty Bowls Dinner scheduled for Friday, December 12. The way an Empty Bowls Dinner works is simple. Guests purchase tickets for the event in advance, and then select a handmade bowl in which they will be served a simple dinner of soup and bread. Our soup is being donated by Mr. Tom Gray and the cafeteria staff. Guests keep the bowls as a reminder that there are always Empty Bowls in the world.

Most of our bowls will be created community style, meaning different artistsMW100608_BoysCeram.jpg may work with the bowls at different stages of their creation, and all bowls will be stamped with a logo designed for the event. Many students are helping with this community process as part of their Christian Service for the academic year. Some bowls will also be presented as Silent Auction Pieces. We will be inviting some ‘celebrities’ to create or decorate bowls, and some of the largest/highest quality pieces will also be presented this way. Tickets for this event will be sold in advance, beginning in late October. Cost will be $25/ticket in advance, $35 at the door. The full proceeds from this event will be donated to the Bethesda Project (www.bethesdaproject.org). Many Malvern students are familiar with this organization through Christian Service at St. Augustine’s, as representatives from the Bethesda Project usually speak to our sophomores on service weekends.

Please mark your calendars, and stay tuned to the Malvern Weekly for announcements about ticket sales. If you are interested in assisting with setup for the event, or would like promotional materials to share with your workplace or organization, please contact kplows@malvernprep.org.

Pond Dredging and Dam Repair to Begin
October 2, 2008
No, a new parking lot is not being constructed next to the Mary Statue. But what is happening are the beginning stages of repairs to the dam and Black Friar Pond. This fall, the pond will be drained; the fish removed and later put back; the pond dredged eight-to-twelve-feet deep; and the dam at the south edge of the pond will be repaired. As for the work being done on the hill ... that’s where the residue from the dredging will be contained.

Upper School Student Council Charged to Be Servant Leaders

Flynn, O.S.A. called upon the new officers of the Malvern Prep Upper School Student Council to be true servant leaders of their school, to follow one of the tenets of the school’s mission, “to grow and give in a family distinguished by respect, challenge, service and exceptional love.”
