Malvern Alumnus Ryan Nassib Selected in 4th Round of NFL Draft

Being selected to play in the NFL is an extremely rare feat. To have two student-athletes from the same school chosen in the same year is ... well, in Malvern's case, it has never happened ... until this year. On April 27, the New York Giants selected former Friar and Syracuse quarterback Ryan Nassib '08 in the 4th round of the NFL Draft. Later in the day, Rob McCabe '09, who starred at linebacker for Georgetown, signed a free agent contract with the Miami Dolphins.

Author Visit Highlights National Library Week

Malvern Prep Athletic Director Kurt Ruch has announced the hiring of Anthony DeCecco as Head Tennis Coach with Malvern alumnus and former touring USTA professional, David DiLucia ’88 as assistant.

DiLucia who graduated from Malvern in 1988 is a former touring USTA professional who had a stellar career as a student at Malvern Prep and continued his success at the University of Notre Dame.

5th Annual Empty Bowls Benefits Area’s Homeless

5th Empty Bowls a success with close to 1,000 Bowls!! On Monday, January 21, students, parents, teachers, family and friends gathered on the campus of Malvern Prep to raise money to benefit the area’s homeless population. The annual event is called Empty Bowls, and it combines Malvern’s love of clay with the school’s dedication to community service.

Empty Bowls was chaired this year by Malvern Prep seniors Matthew Cornell of West Chester, Matthew Miller of Collegeville, and Colin Pawlowski of Drexel Hill.

The Board of Trustees of Malvern Preparatory School announced today the appointment of Christian M. Talbot as Malvern’s 13th Head of School, effective July 1, 2012. Currently English Department Chair at Regis High School, a Catholic college preparatory school for boys in New York City, Talbot’s appointment is the culmination of an extensive national search and a unanimous recommendation from the Head of School Search Committee.

Author Gordon Korman kicks off National Library Week at Malvern

Gordon Korman wrote his first book at the tender age of 12. The manuscript for This Can't be Happening at Macdonald Hall was a 7th grade writing assignment, which he got published after mailing it to the address on the back of a Scholastic book order form.

His grade for that project: B+.

Korman, who has published more than 75 novels for children and young adults, visited Malvern Prep on Monday to help kick off National Library Week at Sullivan Hall. He spoke with Middle School students who had prepared for his visit by reading Korman’s 2007 novel, Schooled, this past summer.

Ben Davis ’95 shared plenty of baseball stories at Monday’s 65th Annual Father-Son Dinner, regaling his extended Malvern Prep family with funny tales of MLB teammates like Ricky Henderson, John Olerud, Derek Jeter and Jorge Posada. He also spoke fondly of his days in a Friars uniform, including a senior season in which he batted .514 with six home runs and 37 RBIs and was selected second overall in the draft by the San Diego Padres.
But Davis, the recipient of the 2011 Leadership Award, spoke seriously and from the heart on Monday night, imploring the youngsters in the audience to work hard to achieve their goals in life. “I believe this generation does not know the true meaning of hard work. This is my challenge to you. Prove me wrong.”

The phone call came on June 6, 2010, as Austin Bury ’11 was on his way home from Canada, where he had been racing as a member of Malvern Prep Crew. The call was from his dad, Tim, who delivered the news that Austin’s cousin, 26-year-old Marine Sgt. Brandon Bury, had been killed while supporting combat operations in Afghanistan. The news weighed heavy on Austin’s heart as he endured that long trip home.

A three-year Varsity rower and captain for Coach Craig Hoffman, Bury helped the United States National Team win a gold medal for quads in the 2010 CanAmMex championships, and won a silver medal in the double at the same event. Bury is a two-time gold medalist at the Philadelphia City Championships (2009 and 2010), the Stotesbury Cup Regatta (2009 and 2010), and the Scholastic Rowing Association of America National Championships (2009 and 2010).

Art exhibit raise more than $1,000 for Main Line Animal Rescue

As first-time fundraisers go, Art for the Animals, a collaborative effort between Villa Maria Academy and Malvern Prep, did pretty well for itself.
The gallery show, held at Villa Maria from Feb. 24-March 3, showcased animal-themed artwork created by students from both schools, with proceeds to benefit Main Line Animal Rescue (MLAR). The festive Feb. 24 opening night also featured the sale of “Mugs for MLAR,” which the boys and girls decorated together in the Duffy studio, a bake sale, and a sale of homemade dog treats.

Spanish exchange students wrap up their visit to Malvern

The three Spanish exchange students who wrapped up their four-week stay at Malvern Prep on March 10 will miss many things about the U.S., especially the friends they made on campus. But one distinctly Philadelphia amenity stands out.
“The cheesesteaks… We’ll definitely miss the cheesesteaks.”

Andres Navarro, 15, Christian Aalvik, 15, and Jorge Bravo, 14, attend Colegio Alfonso XII, one of Spain’s premier prep schools, in San Lorenzo, Spain. Founded in 1875, the coed, Catholic, K-12 school is housed in a 16th century monastery, El Escorial, built by King Philip II and located 25 miles outside of Madrid. Last week, Malvern Prep donated 17 guitars to the Saint Martin de Porres School in North Philadelphia. The guitars were cleaned, fixed and restrung by Jon Springer’s sixth grade class last semester. The guitars were put to immediate use by St. Martin de Porres’ students. In the past, the school’s music teacher has taught with no instruments, so this donation enables the children to gain hands on experience.
