I’ve heard Jim Stewart refer to a “Triangle of Success.” What does he mean by that?
The relationship between parent, teacher and student is critical to the education process.  Malvern encourages parents to be aware and active in their son’s education and expects the lines of communication be open at all times.  Successful education will be the result.

Who should I call if I have an overall question or a concern?
Mr. Stewart encourages all parents to call him, e-mail him or schedule an appointment to see him.   He will direct you to the appropriate person if he is unable to answer your question.   Mr. Stewart’s phone number is (484) 595-1107 and his e-mail is jstewart@malvernprep.org.

What does the Development Office do?
The Development Office, located in Austin Hall, has three branches.
• Communications (publications, public relations, photography)
• Alumni Relations (alumni events, networking, volunteerism)
• Fundraising (The Malvern Fund, fundraising events, major gifts)

What does the Development Office expect from parents?
The Development office hopes that our parents will be involved at Malvern in some meaningful way to help make our school better and to enhance your son’s experience. There are many volunteer opportunities that give you a chance to assist the school, get to know Malvern better and meet and befriend other parents. Mothers’ Club, Fathers’ Club, B.A.S.H., Library Aid, Office Aid and Garden Guild are just a few ways to get involved. Malvern, like all other independent schools, relies heavily on the support of our parents and alumni. The Malvern Fund is our primary fundraiser each year and we always aim for 100% participation from our parents. Other fundraisers include B.A.S.H. (Building A Scholastic Heritage), The Father Duffy Golf Invitational, and the Teachers’ Retirement Fund. Please feel free to call the Development Office at 484-595-1110 if you have questions or if you would like to get involved.

What is B.A.S.H.?
B.A.S.H. is Malvern’s biggest fundraising event.  Overseen by the Development Office, but run by volunteers, it is always held the last Saturday in April.  It was started 30 years ago in an effort to offset School expenses.  It is typically a black-tie optional event with a silent auction, live auction, dinner and entertainment.  All parents are welcome and encouraged to attend and get involved.

How can we join the Mothers’ Club or Fathers’ Club?
By simply being a parent, you’ve already joined.  All mothers are invited to attend Mothers’ Club meetings and events, and all fathers are invited to attend Fathers’ Club meetings and events.  The dates for these meetings and events are listed in the calendar and updated through the school’s monthly mailing, called “The Loop.”

Does Malvern have an Orientation period for students?
Malvern holds multi-day Orientations sessions for sixth graders and ninth graders during the first few days of school.  It helps them get acquainted with each other and the campus.

If I have a question for a teacher, how do I get in touch with them?
All teachers have voice mail and e-mail.  Not every teacher has a direct phone line.  To e-mail anyone at Malvern, follow this example:jsmith@malvernprep.org .  All phone numbers are listed in the Student Handbook.  If you can’t remember, dial the school’s main number at 484-595-1100 and you will be connected.

Is Malvern prepared for an emergency on or off campus?  What are parents expected to do?
Malvern has an emergency plan in place.  Parents will be notified via phone and/or e-mail, if an emergency has occurred.  During an emergency, parents will be given instructions via phone, e-mail, website (www.malvernprep.org) and/or school hotline (484-595-1103).  Parents are encouraged to check these modes of information prior to acting.

What do I do if it snows?
If it snows overnight, information regarding school closure will be posted on our website at www.malvernprep.org, addressed on our school hotline at 494-595-1103 and announced on Channel 6 or Channel 3 and KYW-News Radio and WCOJ Radio.  If it snows during the day and Malvern decides to close, the same broadcast venues will be used.

What do most students typically wear?
Malvern’s students are expected to follow the Dress Code policy spelled out in the Student Handbook.  There are three variations the students must follow.  First is the Casual Dress Code, where students wear a white or blue Malvern Prep golf shirt, solid colored pants, belt, dress shoes and socks.  The golf shirt can be purchased at the Campus Store.   (The typical student wears the golf shirt with khakis.) When Formal Dress Code is required, students must wear a sport coat, dress shirt, dress pants, tie, dress shoes and socks. (The typical student wears khakis, long-sleeve button-down shirt with a tie and a blazer - usually blue.) And finally, on Dress Down Days, which are noted on the School calendar, the code is more flexible but clothing must still be clean and not torn.  (The typical student wears jeans or workout pants and a pullover.)

My son says it’s okay to wear cargo pants and boots, is this true?
No. Here are a few prohibited items during casual and formal dress code.  Students may not wear sweatshirts, fleeces, Hawaiian, plaid or denim shirts, turtlenecks, jeans, cargo pants, faded cords, boots, sandals, sneakers, clogs, long-sleeved shirts under their golf shirts, hats, shorts, or inappropriate slogan on apparel.  In addition, no pierced ears, noses, tongues, eyebrows or band-aids to cover any piercing.  Hair must be its natural color and neatly cropped. [Read all the rules in the Student Handbook.]

Can I buy the dress code items and books at the Campus Store?
Certain items, like the blue and white Malvern golf shirts, are sold at the Campus Store, which is open at Registration and every day the students are in school.  The solid-colored blazers can be purchased anywhere, however Malvern’s Mothers’ Club runs the Friar’s Resale Shop that specializes in quality, pre-owned school clothing, with some new items.  It will be open at Registration and at various other times during the year as designated on the School calendar.

Where is the Campus Store?
The Store is located on the west side of Stewart Hall.  For more information call (484) 595-1125.

What do I do if my son has an appointment and will be absent?
We encourage parents to plan appointments after school hours.  However, if the absence is planned, such as a medical appointment or college visit, the parents must notify the Dean of Students Office directly at least 24 hours in advance by written note or by calling 484-595-1150.  The student must submit a physician’s note or a dated college affidavit directly to the Dean of Students’ Office upon his return.

What if the absence is unplanned and I can’t give 24-hours notice?
On the day your son is absent, you must call the school at 484-595-1100 between 8 and 9 a.m.    Upon his return, the student must deliver a letter from you directly to the Dean of Students prior to Homeroom.

What if he is just late to school?
Homeroom begins at 8:15 a.m.  Students arriving after Homeroom begins must report to the Dean of Students for a late slip.  This helps Malvern keep track of everyone on campus.

Where do I drop off and pick up my son?
If you are dropping off or picking up your son on time, you can meet him at the student drop off area by Sullivan Hall in the East Lot.  If you are dropping him off late, please use this same area so he can stop at the Dean of Students Office.  If you are picking him up early, please meet him in Austin Hall so you can sign him out at the Head Receptionist’s Desk.

What is a “C” Schedule?
The calendar denotes when the students should follow different daily schedules.  “C” Schedules are utilized for various reasons, but the school day is over at 2:20 p.m. unless otherwise noted on the calendar.  It is important to note that buses still pick students up at the regular time.

What is ninth period?
Ninth period is a designated time for students to get extra help in any particular subject.  It can be requested or required.

Do students carry backpacks during the day?
Most students do carry backpacks to class.  All students have lockers that they are encouraged to visit when time permits.  The only students who are not permitted to carry backpacks during the day are sixth graders.

What do I do if my son loses something?
Students have several places to look if something has been misplaced.  There are lost and found racks in the Library, at the Dean of Students Office, at the Dean of the Middle School Office and at the Athletic Director’s Office.  If the item can’t be found there, the Mothers’ Club runs a Lost and Found.  Students are encouraged to put their name in all their belongings.

How do I get a message to my son?
Parents are discouraged from attempting to relay a message to their son during school hours, unless it is a true emergency.  If there is an emergency, parents can call the Dean of Student’s Office at 484-595-1150, but the message’s delivery time will be at the discretion of the Dean.   Students are permitted to have cell phones on campus, but they must be kept turned off in a car or locker and they may not be kept in school bags or pockets.  The phone will be confiscated if this policy is not obeyed.
