On June 18, longtime Assistant to the President and Head of School Toni Wheeler retired after 17 years of service to Malvern Prep. Many friends and coworkers joined Toni and her husband, Ted, at a party in Austin Hall to celebrate her time at Malvern and wish her luck in retirement.
The following interview appeared the Winter 2007 issue of Malvern News, which has since been replaced with the Malvern Weekly and Malvern Alumni Weekly electronic newsletters.
How long have you been with the School?
I started out in the Alumni Office, and for the past 13 years I have been the administrative assistant for the President and the Head of School. Before coming here, I worked for Villanova University for 13 years as an assistant in the library, Law School admissions and purchasing.
What are your duties at Malvern Prep?
Anything to support Jim Stewart and Fr. Flynn, such as typing letters, maintaining their calendars, setting up meetings and taking messages. I also do a lot for the Board of Trustees, preparing for meetings, taking minutes and keeping the Board up to date with what's going on at the School. And, like all the other staff in Austin Hall, I help out with mailings and other projects.
What are some of your fondest memories of working at Malvern?
A lot of people probably say this, but I really enjoyed working for Fr. Duffy. We just connected. He made me feel like I was his very best friend. I could tell him almost anything.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I like to read and to knit - as anyone who has seen my "KNT WIT" license plate knows. I love my two dogs, a yellow lab named Ollie and a black lab named Duffy, who was named after Father. I also enjoy classical music and '50's, '60's and '70's rock and roll.
