Malvern Prep took home its second consecutive Heyward Cup trophy for Inter-Ac excellence this year, scoring a league-record 61 points in the process. The student athletes below will continue their athletic success in college.
Baseball
Five Malvern Prep baseball players, each of whom graduated on June 5, have announced their college choices. Under Head Coach Mike Hickey, Malvern Prep has won the Inter-Ac League baseball championship for three consecutive seasons and captured the Pennsylvania Independent School State Championship in 2006. This season, Malvern ended its season ranked ninth in the nation by Baseball America and 10th in the nation by USA Today.
Nick Busillo, Jr. (Media) – Muhlenberg College
Nick Busillo, Jr., son of Nick and Janet Busillo of Media, will play baseball for Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pa. Busillo was a varsity left-fielder for the Friars for two years. He earned Honorable Mention All-Inter-Ac, and was also an All-Inter-Ac First Team selection as an offensive tackle in football.
Chris Cowell (Devon) – University of Richmond
Chris Cowell, son of John and Bridget Cowell of Devon, will play baseball for the University of Richmond in Richmond, Va. Cowell was a four-year varsity performer at catcher and third base and was named First Team All-Inter-Ac and First Team All-Main Line. He was also an All-Inter-Ac selection in basketball in 2007 and 2008. Cowell is a member of the National Honor Society.
John Gentile (East Fallowfield) – Lafayette College
John Gentile, son of Dr. John and Mrs. Charlene Gentile of East Fallowfield, will play baseball for Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. Gentile was a right-handed pitcher and second baseman for the Friars, who was named Inter-Ac MVP by the league coaches. Gentile was captain of the Malvern team this season.
Buddy Glatz (Phoenixville) – McDaniel College
Buddy Glatz, son of Bob and Denise McHugh of Phoenixville, will play baseball for McDaniel College in Westminster, Md. Glatz was a two-year varsity pitcher for the Friars who won the team Coach’s Award. He has also been an American Legion All-Star. Glatz swam at Malvern during his freshman and sophomore years, and is an editor of the school newspaper and a member of the Malvern jazz band.
Alex Olah (Lansdale) – University of Mary Washington
Alex Olah, son of Tim and Roberta Olah of Lansdale, will play baseball for the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va. Olah is a three-year varsity outfielder for the Friars.
Basketball
Matt McManus (Malvern) – DeSales University
Matt McManus, son of Kathy and Joe McManus of Malvern, has announced that he will continue his basketball career at DeSales University in Allentown. McManus, who graduated on June 5, was captain of the Malvern basketball team in his senior season, in which he was named team Most Improved Player and received a Markward Memorial Basketball Club. McManus also competed in outdoor track his senior year.
Crew
Five Malvern Prep crew team members, each of whom graduated on June 5, will be rowing at the collegiate level next year. Under Head Coach Craig Hoffman, the Malvern Crew team has experienced unprecedented success in recent years. For the sixth year in a row, Malvern received the Horvat Trophy, given for the top point total in Manny Flick Sculling Race Series. In addition, the varsity quad completed a sweep of the three major championships including Cities, Stotesbury, and National Scholastic Rowing Championships for the second year in a row. Four Malvern Prep boats raced at the U.S. Rowing Junior Championships, with the varsity quad finishing first, and the varsity quad competed in the Henley Royal Regatta in England.
Matthew Benedetto (Newtown Square) – St. Joseph’s University
Matthew Benedetto, son of Cassie and Ernest Benedetto of Newtown Square, will row for St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia. In his junior season, Benedetto earned first place in the lightweight double at the National Youth Championships, the Head of the Charles Regatta, the Stotesbury Cup and the National Scholastic Rowing Championships. This season, he won gold at the City Championships, took third at the Stotesbury Cup and took second at the National Scholastic Rowing Championships. At Malvern, Benedetto was also involved in the newspaper and National Honor Society.
Michael Bohs (West Chester) – Cornell University
Michael Bohs, son of Eileen and Lee Bohs of West Chester, will row for Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. Bohs was a member of the Varsity Quad this year, which completed a sweep of the three major championships including Cities, Stotesbury, and National Scholastic Rowing Championships and was a national champion last year in Lightweight Double.
Mike Rawlings, Jr. (West Chester) – Columbia University
Mike Rawlings, Jr., son of Julia and Michael Rawlings of West Chester, will row for Columbia University in New York. As a member of the varsity quad, Rawlings completed a sweep of the three major championships including Cities, Stotesbury, and National Scholastic Rowing Championships the past two seasons. Last year at the Henley Regatta, Rawlings led the Friars into the quarterfinals of the prestigious Fawley Challenge Cup for high school and club quads.
Randy Scott (Malvern) – Columbia University
Randy Scott, son Elaine and John Scott of Malvern, will row at Columbia University in New York. This season, Scott claimed first in the varsity single at the City Championships, sixth at Stotesbury and fourth at the National Scholastic Rowing Championships. Scott rowed at the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta last season. Scott is also a member of the Malvern Prep Jazz Band and is involved in the Chester County Down Syndrome Interest Group.
Sean Stewart (Havertown) – St. Joseph’s University
Sean Stewart, son of Eileen and Michael Stewart of Havertown, will row at St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia. As a junior, Stewart took second in the varsity double at the Stotesbury Cup and competed at the Henley Royal Regatta. This season, Stewart took first in the lightweight double at the City Championships, third at the Stotesbury Cup and took second at the National Scholastic Rowing Championships.
Football
Five Malvern Prep football team members will be playing at the collegiate level next year. Each of these students graduated on June 5 and were members of the 2007 Inter-Ac Championship football team.
Joseph Coffey (Drexel Hill) – Dickinson College
Joseph Coffey, son of Joseph and Marian Coffey of Drexel Hill, will play football for Dickinson College in Carlisle. Coffey was a three-year varsity performer at linebacker for Friar head coach Gamp Pellegrini and was named All-Inter-Ac, All-Main Line, All-City and was a participant in the Valor Bowl. He was a member of the Diversity Council, participated in the Speak Up Against Drugs and Alcohol Program and was a member of the Stock Market Club.
Philip Congialdi (Havertown) – Muhlenberg College
Philip Congialdi, son of Philip and Denise Congialdi of Havertown, will play football for Muhlenberg College in Allentown. Congialdi was a three-year varsity performer at linebacker for Friar head coach Gamp Pellegrini. He was team captain in his senior season, received the team coach’s award and was named All-Inter-Ac.
Chris Crowding (Springfield) – Johns Hopkins University
Chris Crowding, son of James and Virginia Crowding of Springfield, will play football for Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md. Crowding was a three-year varsity performer at safety for Friar head coach Gamp Pellegrini.
Michael McKee (Malvern) – Dickinson College
Michael McKee, son of Gerry and Lynn McKee of Malvern, will play football for Dickinson College in Carlisle. McKee was a three-year varsity performer at defensive end for Friar head coach Gamp Pellegrini and was a participant in the Valor Bowl. He was also a member of the Diversity Council at Malvern.
Ryan Nassib (West Chester) – Syracuse University
Ryan Nassib, son of Gilbert and Mary Nassib of West Chester, will play football for Syracuse University in Syracuse, N.Y. Nassib had orally committed to Syracuse last spring and made his official decision February 6. As the Malvern football team’s quarterback, Nassib, led the Friars to the Inter-Ac League Championship this season. Nassib was Co-MVP of Inter-Ac League, Malvern Prep Team MVP, Daily News Co-Inter-Ac Player of the Year and an All-Main Line selection.
Lacrosse
Eight Malvern Prep lacrosse players will be playing at the collegiate level next year. Each of these students graduated on June 5 and were members of the 2008 Inter-Ac champion lacrosse team.
Matthew Conte (Thornton) – University of North Carolina
Matthew Conte, son of Linda and Phil Conte of Thornton, will play lacrosse for the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C. Conte was a four-year varsity midfielder for Friar head coach John McEvoy, and was an All-Inter-Ac and honorable mention All-Main Line selection. He was also a member of the football team and investment club.
Christopher Creighton (West Chester) – Fairfield University
Christopher Creighton, son of Peg and Chuck Creighton of West Chester, will play lacrosse for Fairfield University in Fairfield, Conn. Creighton was a three-year varsity defender for head coach John McEvoy, and was an All-State, All-Inter-Ac and a second-team All-Main Line selection. He was a team captain in his senior season.
Christian Kellet (Audubon) – Mount St. Mary’s University
Christian Kellet, son of Gayle and Lee Kellet of Audubon, will play lacrosse for Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Md. Kellet was a four-year varsity attack for Friar head coach John McEvoy.
Chris Layne (Downingtown) – University of North Carolina
Chris Layne, son of Felicia and Steve Layne of Downingtown, Pa., will play lacrosse for the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C. Layne was a four-year varsity midfielder for Friar head coach John McEvoy. In his senior season, Layne was named All-American, All-State, All-Main Line and All-Inter-Ac. In his junior season he was named All-State and All-Inter-Ac. He was also named All-Inter-Ac in his sophomore and freshman years. Layne was also a standout member of the Friar football team.
Matt Mackrides (Newtown Square) – Penn State University
Matt Mackrides, son of Donna and Michael Mackrides of Newtown Square, will play lacrosse for Penn State University in State College. Mackrides was a four-year varsity attack for Friar head coach John McEvoy. Mackrides was a member of the under-19 U.S. national lacrosse team, which captured the world championship on July 12. This season, he was also named All-American, All-State, All-Main Line and was MVP of the Inter-ac League. In addition, Mackrides was named All-American in his junior season, All-State in his junior and sophomore seasons, and All-Inter-Ac in his junior, sophomore and freshman campaigns.
Colin McGeehin (Newtown Square) – College of the Holy Cross
Colin McGeehin, son of Kim and Frank McGeehin of Newtown Square, will play lacrosse for the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass. McGeehin was a three-year varsity attack for Friar head coach John McEvoy. He was named All-State and second-team All-Main Line in his senior season and All-Inter-Ac in his senior and junior seasons. McGeehin was also captain of the Malvern squash team, a member of the National Honor Society, and a Malvern senior retreat leader.
Chris Powers (Jeffersonville) – Ursinus College
Chris Powers, son of Claire and Bob Powers of Jeffersonville, will play lacrosse for Ursinus College in Collegeville. Powers was a three-year varsity midfielder for Friar head coach John McEvoy. Powers was also a member of the Malvern soccer team.
Rob Rumer (Kimberton) – Franklin and Marshal College
Rob Rumer, son of Eileen and Robert Rumer of Kimberton, will play lacrosse for Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa. Rumer was a varsity midfielder for Friar head coach John McEvoy and was awarded the Most Improved Player award by the coaches at Malvern this year. He was a member of the National Honor Society, an AP Scholar, member of the Business Club and Investment Club, where he was two time winner of the Stock Market Game, placing second in the state of Pennsylvania. Rumer achieved Distinguished and First Honors while at Malvern and also played on the squash and varsity soccer teams.
Soccer

Tyler Cook (Schwenksville) – Gettysburg College
Tyler Cook, son of Pat and Cindy Cook of Schwenksville, will play soccer for Gettysburg College in Gettysburg. Cook was a three-year varsity defenseman for Friar head coach Leighton Walters and was a captain of the team his senior season earning All-Inter-Ac honors.
David Fugok (Broomall) – University of Scranton
David Fugok, son of George and Karen Fugok of Broomall, will play soccer for the University of Scranton in Scranton. Fugok was a four-year varsity midfielder and attack for Friar head coach Leighton Walters and was an All-Inter-Ac selection in his senior season.
Nate Tipton (West Chester) – Main Maritime Academy
Christian Kellet, son of Dailey and Jessica Tipton of West Chester, will play soccer for Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, Maine. Tipton was a three-year varsity midfielder and striker for Friar head coach Leighton Walters and was a team captain and coach’s award winner in his senior season.
Swimming and Diving
Alex Marple (E. Norriton) – University of Pennsylvania
Alex Marple of East Norriton, son of Russell Marple and Rosemary Dillon, will continue his diving career at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Marple is a four-year varsity member of the Malvern Prep swimming and diving team under had coach Paul Hornsleth and assistant coach Jay Schiller. Marple won the diving championship at the Inter-Ac meet this past year and was named First Team All-Inter-Ac and All-Main Line in 2008. He holds school records in the one-meter, six-dive and one-meter, 11-dive events.
Track and Field
Malvern Prep enjoyed its most successful track and field season in school history, setting numerous school records, capturing the 2008 Inter-Ac Championship and finishing the season ranked first in the nation for schools with male enrollments under 500 by Nike Web Nationals. Four members of that championship team will compete for Division I programs next year:
Andrew Finley (Wallingford) – University of South Carolina – Throws
Andrew Finley, son of Joe and Anna Marie Finley of Wallingford, will compete in track and field for the University of South Carolina in Columbia, S.C. Finley, who threw the shot put and discus for head coach Mike Koenig, was a team captain and was voted a team MVP this season. Finley is the Malvern school record holder in the shot put (54-2) and discus (140-10) and was the Inter-Ac champion in the shot put. Finley placed 10th in the state in indoor track in the shot put this winter. He was a Penn Relays qualifier in the shot put for the High School Championship of America, and was chosen First Team All-Area and All-Main Line by local newspapers. Finley was also the team MVP of the Malvern Prep water polo team and set school records for career and season goals.
Brian Fulton (West Chester) – University of Pennsylvania – Middle Distance
Brian Fulton, son of Larry and Jacquelyn Fulton of West Chester, will compete in track and field for the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Fulton, who was a middle distance star for head coach Mike Koenig, was a team captain and was voted a team MVP this season. Fulton is the Malvern school record holder in the 800-meter-run (1:52.77) and 400-meter dash (49.6). Fulton anchored the winning 4x400-meter relay team in the Penn Relays Inter-Ac Championship to a school and Penn Relays Inter-Ac-record time of 3:24.62. At the league championship meet, Fulton took first place in the 400-meter dash, the 800-meter-run and the 4x400-meter relay. Fulton was third in the state in indoor track in the 800-meter run with a school-record time of 1:55.2. Fulton was named First Team All-Main Line and Second Team All-Area. Also a standout cross country runner, Fulton was the 2006 Inter-Ac champion and was a First Team All-Maine Line selection. Fulton excelled in the classroom, as well, finishing his high school career with the highest GPA in his class and earning National Merit Commended Student recognition.
Tom McGarrigle (Malvern) – Bucknell University – Sprints
Tom McGarrigle, son of Tom and Ellen McGarrigle of Malvern, will compete in track and field for Bucknell University in Lewisburg. McGarrigle, who specialized in the sprints for head coach Mike Koenig, was a team captain this season. McGarrigle came off a broken foot during soccer season to be a key component of the track team, placing third in the 200-meter dash at the Inter-Ac Championships. McGarrigle was a member of the winning 4x400-meter relay team in the Penn Relays Inter-Ac Championship, which set a school and Penn Relays Inter-Ac-record time of 3:24.62. McGarrigle ranks fourth in school history in both the 100-meter dash (10.9) and 200-meter dash (22.5). In 2007, McGarrigle was named First Team All-Area and All-Main Line. McGarrigle also played varsity soccer for Malvern and was the vice president of his senior class.
Doug Moppert (Media) – University of Texas – Jumps
Doug Moppert, son of Harry and Valerie Moppert of Media, will compete in track and field for the University of Texas in Austin. Moppert, who participated in both the jumps and sprints for head coach Mike Koenig, was a team captain and was voted a team MVP this season. Moppert holds school records in the long jump (23-3) and the triple jump (44-10) and was a member of the winning 4x400-meter relay team in the Penn Relays Inter-Ac Championship, which set a school and Penn Relays Inter-Ac-record time of 3:24.62. Moppert also finished third in the long jump in the High School Championship of America at Penn Relays. At the league championship meet, Moppert took first place in the long jump, triple jump and the 4x400-meter relay. Moppert also won the state indoor track title in the long jump. Moppert was named First Team All-Main Line and Second Team All-Area. Also a standout hockey player, Moppert led the Friars in goals this season and was a First Team All-Main Line selection.
