During this weekends Homecoming festivities, Malvern Preparatory School honored William J. Cashore, M.D. 58, a respected pediatric surgeon and researcher, with the prestigious St. Augustine Alumni Award and also paid tribute to five other notable Malvern Prep alumni, first at the Alumni Awards Dinner on Friday night, and again today at halftime of the Schools football game, which Malvern won 53-8, against Episcopal Academy.
Cashore received St. Augustine Alumni Award for his distinguished lifetime achievements that exemplify the spirit of Malvern Prep and the core values of the Augustinian tradition. He attained international renown in medicine for his care of critically ill premature infants. Cashore is a professor at the Brown University School of Medicine and is Associate Chief of Pediatrics at the Women and Infants Hospital of Rhode Island.
Also recognized this weekend were Edward F. Klinges, Jr. 75, who received the Alumni Loyalty Award, given because of his dedicated support of fundraising and alumni efforts at Malvern, and four alumni who were be inducted into the Malvern Athletic Hall of Fame: Bruce A. Irvine 56, Thomas L. Kelly 61, Eugene S. Chakejian 88 and Terrence M. Gallagher 90.
Malvern Alumni Award Winner Profiles
William J. Cashore, M.D. 58 St. Augustine Alumni Award
William J. Cashore, M.D. 58 attained international renown in medicine for his care of critically ill premature infants. He is a professor at the Brown University School of Medicine, where he has served for 35 years, and is Associate Chief of Pediatrics at the Women and Infants Hospital of Rhode Island. Cashore has been heralded in the medical community for his innovative research and excellence of care. He serves on the editorial review boards of 12 prestigious medical journals and has published nearly 200 scientific journal articles, book chapters, book reviews and editorials.
Edward F. Klinges, Jr. 75 Alumni Loyalty Award
Edward F. Klinges, Jr. 75 has been a dedicated member of the Malvern Prep Alumni Association. He became actively involved in the Alumni Board in 2001, was elected Executive Vice President in 2003 and was elected President of the Alumni Board in 2005, holding that position for three years. He has also served on the Malvern Board of Trustees for the past three years.
Bruce A. Irvine 56 Athletic Hall of Fame
Bruce A. Irvine 56 played fullback and linebacker for the Malvern football team, twice earning First-Team All-Inter-Ac status and earning a varsity letter in football and track for three years.
Thomas L. Kelly 61 Athletic Hall of Fame
Thomas L. Kelly 61 lettered in cross country, basketball and track for Malvern Prep. During his senior year, Kelly was captain of an undefeated cross country team, captain of the Inter-Ac champion basketball team and a First-Team All-Inter-Ac selection, and was captain of the Inter-Ac Champion track and field team while being named most outstanding performer at the league championship meet.
Eugene S. Chakejian 88 Athletic Hall of Fame
Eugene S. Chakejian 88 was a two-time All-Inter-Ac swimmer and a two-time All-Inter-Ac defensive tackle on the football team. He was recognized First Team All-Area, All-Main Line, All-City and All-Suburban.
Terrence M. Gallagher 90 Athletic Hall of Fame
Terrence M. Gallagher 90 lettered in cross country, soccer, wrestling and track and field at Malvern, earning Team MVP and All-Inter-Ac status in cross country. His most outstanding accomplishments, though, came on the wrestling mat, where he twice placed second at the National Prep School Championships. A three-time All-Inter-Ac wrestler, Gallagher captained his squad his senior season and was named Team MVP.
