In an end-of-the-year clay throw-down, Ms. Kate Plows’ Ceramics I students challenged Ms. Jackie White’s Ceramics I students to a “Bowl-off” to see who could make the most bowls for Empty Bowls 2010, a fundraiser/art show that supports the Bethesda Project.
The teachers added a few of the upper-level students on our teams and the competition was on! Students worked ‘community-style’ all week long in a fierce competition – throwing, trimming, signing and cleaning up pieces as teams. In the end, Ms. White’s classes made 157 bowls and Ms. Plows’ classes made 134. However, the judges (Ms. Ann Wuetig and Mrs. Pat Nicotera) balanced craftsmanship with quantity and deemed the result a tie.
“The true result was that early 300 bowls created in one week — and these are beautiful bowls, which will await glazing during freshman orientation and service weekends this fall,” said Plows. “The students practiced and gained confidence as they applied techniques learned in class towards a project with a purpose. And the Ceramics I students could not be more excited to participate in the event next December (tentatively scheduled for Thursday, December 16), in a spirit of community and service.”
