Malvern Track and Field captures state title
Fresh off capturing its fourth straight Inter-Ac championship, the Malvern Prep Track & Field team won its first-ever state title on Wednesday, May 18 at the Pennsylvania Independent School Athletic Association (PAISAA) Championships at The Hill School’s Colbath Track in Pottstown.
 
Coach Mike Koenig's squad finished the day with 108 points, exactly doubling the score of second place Haverford School's 54 points. Chestnut Hill Academy finished third with 52 points.
 
For Malvern, Eric Purnell finished third in the 100 m dash (6 points) and 200 m dash (6 pts.), Kenny DeStefano placed second in the 400 m dash (8 pts.), and Ryan Bonner finished fifth (2 pts.). Georgetown-bound senior Rich D'Ambrosio won the 110 m and 300 m hurdles for a combined 20 points, while Tom Pitt finished first in the high jump for 10 points. Evan Miller got 6 points and Gus Carlin one point for finishing third and sixth in the pole vault, while Rich D'Ambrosio, Tom Pitt and Eric Purnell brought home another 20 points for finishing first, third and fourth, respectively, in the long jump. Pitt, D'Ambrosio and Denis Ostick ranked first, second and fifth in the triple jump, good for another 20 points, while Tyler O'Connell and John Bradford scored 3 for finishing fifth and sixth in the shot put, and O'Connell scored 6 by finishing third in discus throw.
