Evaluation and Selection/Early Decision

All the admissions requirements for those students interested in early decision for 6th, 7th or 9th grade should be completed in the fall, preferably by mid-November. In the fall prior to the year of enrollment, those files completed by Thanksgiving will be reviewed and possibly acted upon in late December or early January. The 6th and 9th grade classes may be filled by the first week of February. The Admissions Committee will review all files by the end of January.

The applicant’s entrance test results are most important and weigh heavily in the process. The student’s previous academic record (prior two years and fall report card) are considered carefully. The Committee will look specifically at the applicant’s character as presented in the teacher/principal recommendations. Intellectual ability and motivation are also weighed. The extracurricular interests and successes of the applicant are reviewed. This information is sought through both the formal application and the recommendations. Also required are the student’s conduct and attendance records.

The Admissions Committee begins the selection process in mid-December. Since Malvern uses a rolling admissions policy, a student’s file is reviewed when it is complete. Since no application can be acted upon until the candidate’s file is complete, it is clearly to the advantage of the applicant to complete this process as early as possible. First round decisions for outstanding 6th, 7th and 9th grade candidates are communicated to parents and applicants from late December through mid-January. To be considered in the first round, all admissions requirements must be received by the Friday before Thanksgiving. This applies to all sibling and legacy applicants. The second round deadline is January 4. Second round decisions are communicated to parents and applicants by the end of February. If a student is accepted, he and his parents will be invited for an interview. The student and his parents are strongly encouraged to visit the campus during our Morning at Malvern Preview Days in September, November or December and Open House in October. This is a student’s primary visiting day.

Parents are responsible for making sure all forms are completed and received by the Admissions Office. Please do not hesitate to contact us to ensure that all parts of your son’s application have been received, especially the transcripts and teacher recommendations, which must be sent directly to Malvern from your son’s present school.

The most qualified students are accepted first and seats are offered until the class is full. The Admissions Committee creates a waiting pool of qualified applicants after the initial selections have been made.

Sibling/Legacy Policy
Brothers of Malvern students and sons of active alumni are given priority consideration in the admissions process for 6th and 9th grades. To qualify for this consideration, the applicant must have a complete file before Thanksgiving and take the entrance exam in October or November.

Visitation for brothers and sons of alumni usually occur after the file is complete between November 15 and December 15. Brothers and sons of alumni applying for needbased financial aid must meet the same requirements as all other applicants applying for aid.
