Seniors Nicholas B. Anderson of Havertown, Kyle P. Naser of Havertown and Akul V. Penugonda of Lansdowne have been named finalists in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program.
As finalists they are eligible to receive one of 8,300 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $34 million and awarded in the spring. Approximately 1.5 million juniors in 22,000 high schools entered the scholarship program by taking the standardized Preliminary SAT (PSAT). The program then chooses semifinalists, who represent less than 1% of high school seniors and are the highest-scoring entrants in each state.
To become a finalist, students must have outstanding academics records, be endorsed and recommended by their principal, earn high SAT scores and complete a detailed application. Scholarship winners will be selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments and potential for success in rigorous college studies.
