Eight Malvern Prep students tested the math skills by competing in the third annual Mathematics “Owlympiad” held on Friday, May 11, in the Howard Gittis Student Center on the main campus of Temple University. Organized by the Fox School of Business’ Risk, Insurance and Healthcare Management Department and the Sigma Chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma (GIS), the annual event featured three rounds of competition to test the skills of the 11th graders in attendance.

The members of Team A included J.D. Costantini '13, John Booraem '13, Brandon Parvesse '14, and Dan McGlinn '14. The members of Team B included David Spinelli '13, Mike Davis '14, Matt Miller '13 and Dan Rolfes '13.

Twenty-three teams from approximately a dozen schools competed this year in the Owlympiad. The competition is made up of three parts. Part one consists of a 75 multiple choice question test covering topics from Algebra I through Calculus. Part two consists of 12 word problems read out loud. And the final round pits the top two teams head-to-head, with the first team to earn five points declared the winner.

Last year, our top team finished 14th out of 42 teams. This year, our A team was tied for 2nd place after the first two rounds and therefore was given a one-question, Jeopardy-style, chance to make it to the final round. Unfortunately, the other team got the correct answer first. Congratulations to all the students involved. The students are excited to go back next year and win it all.
