Malvern Rowing Wins Two National Championships
Malvern Rowing had a great Memorial Day Weekend at the Scholastic National Rowing Championships on Cooper River in Camden, N.J., winning two national championships in the Varsity Light Quad and Varsity Heavy Quad events.
 
In the Varsity Quad, the team of junior Alex Stoczko, and seniors Mike Lewers (heading to Georgetown University), Austin Velte (Yale) and Jeremy Gonzalez (Navy) finished in 4:34.214, edging Conestoga (4:36.515) and Roman Catholic (4:36.705). Malvern's Varsity Quad has won this event six consecutive years.
 
"The boys were not favored but they executed their race plan and at 750 put a move on, winning their race," Coach Craig Hoffman said of the Varsity Quad.
 
The Light Quad of sophomores Jimmy McManus and John Clark, junior Chris Mudrick and senior Julian Venonsky (Cal-Berkeley) finished at 4:49.503, topping Saratoga (4:54.214) and St. Joseph's Prep (4:57.854).
 
Malvern also finished third in the Varsity Heavy Double (Robbie Smith '12 and Chris Frey '14) and sixth in the Junior Quad (sophomores Mike Stangis, Jackson Conner, Jim Sincavage and Eric Kaufman).
 
Next up for the Malvern Prep boys are the USRowing Youth Nationals on June 8-10 in Tennessee, where the team will enter a lightweight double and heavyeight double and quad.
