Ice Hockey Shuts Out St. Joe's Prep

The avidity of winning advancements in the APAC Division tempers as the last week of regular league games is this week. Malvern, St. Joe's Prep, Holy Ghost Prep, and La Salle strive to clinch top seats in the division as the playoffs approach.

Malvern came off the ice last Wednesday with an overtime win against Holy Ghost Prep while down on players. They set the mood for this week and didn't fall short of their plan - clinch first seed. The competitiveness and adverse talent have caused unexpected outcomes of games this season. The Friars have taken the ice one game at a time and finished out their game on Monday, March 15, 2021, with an astonishing 7-0 win over St. Joe's Prep.

Junior goalie, Anthony Perti, shut out in goal Monday night and later shared, "We came out pretty hard, we really eliminated the number of changes they had on the net. I give it to the offense, they put the puck in the back of the net with over 40 shots of goal. We had a good outburst from them, and I hope we can continue this back when we see St. Joe's Prep on Friday and continue on with APAC and the Flyers Cup."

Though the Friars had nearly 30 more attempts between the bars than St. Joe's, the first period was defensively unbreakable on both ends of the rink. The second period gave both teams a fresh start with no points on the board until the Friars made offensive opportunities to run with.

Matt Harris '22 found center ice, backdoor shot to sweep the puck in the corner of the goal to get things rolling for the Friars. With the remaining five minutes in the second period, the Friars sent goals in the net on goalie Andrew Custer, for St. Joe's, at an insuperable vent. Quinn Dougherty '22 came around the right bend of the rink, ricocheting the puck off a St. Joe's Prep defenseman to score another point. Two minutes following Dougherty's goal, Jack Costabile '21 drove the puck in an open corner crevice. To end the second with a bit more than a minute to spare, Hayden Campbell '24 found wide range on the right side of the rink to rip a shot to put the Friars up by four to enter the final period.

The Friars kept their skates tight throughout the third period to maintain that chance of a chip on their shoulder by the end of the game. Seconds into the third period, Jeremy Jacobs '24 found a quick goal from the puck rebounding off of Custer's pads. St. Joe's found an occasional breakaway through the Friar defense but were shut out by Perti on every scoring attempt. Chris Blango '21 rallied a slapshot from Custer's weak right side with eight minutes remaining. The Friars passed the puck along St. Joe's end of the rink to keep the playing space safe. Costabile finished the game with a final prop of the puck over Custer sprawling on the ice trying to keepsake the puck.

The APAC competition between the Friars and St. Joe's Prep ended with a 7-0 win by the Friars. The two teams meet again on St. Joe's home rink of Skatium on Friday, March 19, 2021, at 7:00 p.m.
