Malvern Prep’s William Cashore ’58 Oldest Living Spelling Bee Champion
The year was 1954, the competition was the 27th Scripps Spelling Bee Championship, the word was “transept,” and the winner was Malvern Prep’s own William Cashore ’58! William was only 14 years old and a student at Malvern Prep when he won his title, making him the oldest living Spelling Bee Champion. He still has vivid memories of the competition and the celebrations that followed. The Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, and People recently featured Mr. Cashore’s accomplishments, his love of language, and his advice for this year’s Spelling Bee participants.
Congratulations William, the Malvern Prep Community is just as proud of your achievement 70 years later!
