- Middle School
The sixth grade was treated to a special visit today from author Matthew Ross Smith. The students recently read Smith’s most recent book, The Million Dollar Race. The story follows the athletic adventures of Grant Falloon and his attempt at breaking the world record for the 100-meter race and collecting the $1 million prize money that comes with the title. The book explores themes of perseverance, sacrifice, and friendship.
During his visit, Smith guided the students through a reading before opening the floor to a question-and-answer session about the book. The students asked insightful questions about his sources of inspiration and how he creates the characters in his stories. Smith shared details about his writing process, what inspires him, and what the editing process entails.
After the reading and discussion, Smith then led small group creative writing workshops. It was an informative and inspirational afternoon for our sixth-grade writers!
