The CSItizen Speaker Team held its first event of the 2022-23 academic year on Wednesday, October 26, in Duffy Theatre. The team welcomed Fr. Greg Boyle founder of Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles, CA, and two of his "Homies," Oscar and Joseph.

Fr. Boyle is a Jesuit priest who started Homeboy Industries, the largest gang intervention, rehabilitation, and re-entry program in the world. He is also the author of several books including, New York Times bestseller Tattoos on the Heart: The Power of Boundless Compassion, Barking to the Choir: The Power of Radical Kinship, and his new book, The Whole Language: The Power of Extravagant Tenderness.

The fireside chat, with over 120 in attendance, was a perfect opportunity to converse with Fr. Boyle about why he started Homeboy Industries, and hear stories about how it has helped so many in the community. Homeboy Industries was created to provide jobs to former gang members and those who have been incarcerated and have trouble finding employment. In describing this mission, Fr, Boyle shared, "work doesn't always help, but help always works."

The CSItizen Speaker Series continues in November with two guests: Brent Celek on November 8 and Jay Wright on November 22. Click here to learn more and register for upcoming events.
