Famed Comic Book Editor and Writer Peter J. Tomasi Visits Malvern Prep

Today, the Malvern Prep Student Idea Center was proud to host famed comic book editor and writer Peter J. Tomasi for the microcourse “Adventures in Storytelling—Comic Books/Graphic Novels from Concept to Page.”

Tomasi guided students through his storytelling techniques, emphasizing the importance of expressing one's heart on the page. He encouraged the students to follow their passions, bet on themselves, and forge their own paths. With a particular focus on character development, he walked students through crafting a hero's journey, starting with identifying what a character desires and determining the next best step for them while mixing in a few issues they must conquer. Drawing on both his own works and those of the students’ favorite stories, he examined what drives a character, what defines them, and the crucial turning point in each character's life when their true purpose is uncovered.

Peter J. Tomasi, who received the 2018 Inkpot Award for achievement in comics, is a New York Times bestselling author known for his work on Superman, Batman and Robin, Super Sons, Green Lantern Corps, Batman-Detective Comics, and many more. In addition to his writing, he served as an award-winning group editor at DC Comics for 15 years, where he helped shape new eras for Batman, Justice Society of America, Green Lantern, and the bestselling Kingdom Come. Peter's latest venture is GHOST MACHINE, a creator-owned and operated entertainment/media company. His 2024 publications sold out before hitting stores and are now in second and third printings.

The Adventures in Storytelling microcourse will continue with a virtual meeting on January 17. Thank you to Mr. Tomasi for sharing your time and talent with Malvern Prep!
