Parent Survey Results

Dear Malvern Parents/Guardians,
Welcome to the 2018-2019 School Year! I am delighted to see the activity on campus, and I look forward to sharing with you the changes and enhancements we intend to make over the coming year. As an Augustinian School, we value self-reflection.
Your thoughts and insights shared in the year-end parent satisfaction survey are integral to our continued growth. For me, feedback is a gift. In concert with the Leadership Team, I spent time over the summer reflecting on the information shared and then asked the respective team members to make the necessary plans to improve our practice in the new year.
Here are the results of the 2017-18 Parent Satisfaction Survey. The data is presented in such as a way as to compare the results from last year with the information received in the 2016-17 School Year. We will continue to offer transparency as we work to identify the ways in which we can become better partners in your son’s education.
I am pleased to report that we have a solid foundation in the areas of Mission, Overall Academic Progress, Final College Choice, and Extra-curricular engagement. Additionally, our parents have a significant sense of pride in a Malvern Prep education and can see our vision forward.
While we have successes to celebrate, there are areas that still require our time, attention, and improvement:
  • Communication - There is a strong need for improved communication between the school and the families. We find this to be most prominent with regard to the consistent use of My Malvern. The Academy Leaders will be reinforcing with the Faculty the need to use My Malvern for assignments, timely grading, and class updates. Additionally, I have asked the Leadership Team to enforce our policy that all emails, phone calls, and requests for meetings need to be responded to within 48 hours.
  • Discipline - The perception that there is a lack of fairness and consistency around our discipline policies were brought to our attention last year. We spent time asking for additional feedback from students and parents regarding our policies and have since revised the discipline program in the student handbook, which we will share with you in more detail in our upcoming Assistant Heads of School Quarterly Newsletter. If you should have questions in the meantime after reviewing the student handbook, please feel contact Tim Dougherty (484-595-1150), Dean of Students.
  • Time Management - Embarking upon design-based education requires an understanding of time management and other important character building skills. We do reinforce the need for time management in the classroom and in our counseling classes; however, as partners we can help our students become more successful together. In the coming months, we hope you will utilize our Unitas Blog for important educational tips. We will use this as a vehicle for the ways in which we can partner together to help your son be more successful here at Malvern. Time Management will be the first topic we cover, so more information will be forthcoming. To begin this partnership, be sure to ask your son “did you visit with your teachers during your free time today?” This will reinforce that the teachers are available for additional assistance and that their time on campus should be used in the best possible way.
  • Counseling Support - We learned in the survey that we need to spend some time reviewing the College Counseling process and better educating our students about how the Counseling Offices can be a support system for their emotional, developmental, academic, and college counseling needs. While the survey hints at our need to pay attention, we need to survey the community more fully to understand the ways in which we can improve. That being said, please look for a more detailed survey regarding our Counseling programs in the coming weeks.
  • Affordability - While our parents are proud that their son attends Malvern Prep, they are also mindful of the costs involved and the importance of their return on investment. We have spent the last year working with a group of parents to discuss the number of times we ask for fees and other fundraisers, which we will continue to discuss in the coming year. An investment in education is a priority and we realize that the funds needed to acquire a Malvern Prep education are continuing to rise. With the support of the Board of Trustees and the Fees and Fundraising parent committee, we will continue our discussions to ensure that we offer affordability while also providing an elite educational product. We will be sure to keep you apprised of ongoing discussions.
I hope you will take a few moments to review the information in the 2017- 2018 Parent Satisfaction Survey. We take your feedback seriously and we want to continue to enhance your son’s educational experience. If you have any questions regarding the survey results, please feel free to contact me (484-595-1107) or Carrie Snyder (484-595-1115), Director of Planning and Effectiveness.
Thank you for your time and thoughtful responses to the survey. We are truly better because of our shared partnership.
