Jim Stewart, Jr. '86 Joins Malvern Prep as Athletic Director

Dear Malvern Prep Community,

As many of you know, Kurt Ruch will be stepping down as Malvern Prep’s Athletic Director on July 31. Kurt will join the George School as their new Athletic Director and I know you join me in wishing Kurt and his family our very best.

I am happy to share that Malvern Prep has concluded an exhaustive search for its new Athletic Director and that search process has reached a favorable conclusion. Mr. Jim Stewart, Jr. '86 will begin as our new Athletic Director on July 16.
Jim comes to us from Holy Ghost Prep, where he served as Athletic Director for 27 years overseeing a competitive 14-sport, 34-team program. During his time at Holy Ghost Prep, Jim was responsible for making ice hockey an interscholastic sport and also adding five teams to the school’s roster of sports including lacrosse, ultimate frisbee, rowing, intramural basketball, and flag football.

In a sense, this is a sort of homecoming for Jim who is the son of former Head of School and President, Jim Stewart. He is also an alumnus of Malvern Prep. In reflecting on this opportunity, Jim shared, “Malvern Prep was my home for the first 18 years of my life. I learned to love sports because of Malvern Prep and the influence of the faculty and Augustinians on me formed who I am today. I am excited to go back to the place that gave me so much. I'm excited to get started, and am very fortunate that the experience at Holy Ghost Prep has prepared me for this change."
Jim is passionate about the mission of Malvern Prep, and I am confident that his years of experience coupled with his familiarity with Malvern Prep will serve our student-athletes well. Jim understands the role athletics programs play in student growth and development and will work hard to create strong leadership characteristics in all of our student-athletes. I look forward to having him continue Malvern’s culture of leadership and sportsmanship in our Athletics Program.

Many people were involved in this process. The search committee was engaged, creative, honest, intelligent, and committed to hiring the best Athletic Director we could find. The committee included members of the Student Leadership and Advancement Teams and was assembled with the utmost intentionality to represent a range of roles and responsibilities - all of whom would work closely with the new Athletic Director. Once the field had narrowed a bit, the committee enlisted the help of student-athletes, coaches, Athletic Department members, and HR to meet with the final candidates. Thank you to all those involved in this process.

Please join me in congratulating Jim, welcoming him back to our community, and wishing him success as he begins his new role with Malvern Prep.

In Augustine,

Rev. Donald F. Reilly, O.S.A., D.Min.
